Bảy ngày trước vua sanh
Trước hiện tướng linh thoại,
Người thấy đều nghĩ rằng
Bậc Cứu Thế sẽ hiện.

Có một ao bửu-hoa
Quang-minh như trời sáng.

Những thứ muốn hại người

Tất cả đều ẩn trốn.
Tiếng xấu và thất lợi
Tai họa cùng bệnh tật
Tất cả khổ đều diệt
Mọi người đều hoan hỉ.
Phàm là chúng-sanh loại
Xem nhau như cha mẹ
Bỏ ác sanh lòng lành
Chuyên cầu nhất-thiết-trí.
Đóng bít các ác thú
Mở bày đường nhân thiên

The Buddha emits light pervading the whole world

 

Phẩm 1, Kinh Hoa Nghiêm

 

1.     Phật phóng quang-minh khắp thế-gian Chiếu sáng mười phương các quốc-độ Chuyển pháp rộng lớn bất-tư-nghì Phá hẳn chúng-sanh nghiệp si-ám.       2.Cảnh-giới vô-biên lại vô-tận Trong vô-lượng kiếp thường khai-thị Thần-lực tự-tại độ quần-sanh Hoa-Kế như vậy quan-sát Phật.     3.Tâm niệm chúng-sanh niệm niệm khác. Phật trí rộng lớn đều rõ biết Thuyết pháp cho họ được vui mừng Diệu-Quang Thiên-Tử được giải thoát.    4.Chúng-sanh không có thật an vui Mê chìm ác đạo thọ sự khổ Như-Lai dạy họ pháp-tánh-môn Lạc-Tâm Thiên-Tử suy gẫm thấy.     5.Như-Lai hy-hữu đại-từ-bi Vì lợi chúng-sanh vào các cõi Thuyết pháp khuyên họ khiến làm lành Nhãn-Quang Thiên-Tử đã rõ biết.     6.Thế-Tôn khai-thị pháp quang-minh Phân biệt thế-gian các nghiệp tánh Chỗ làm thiện ác không mất hư Tịnh-Quang Thiên-Tử lòng vui đẹp.     7.Phật là chỗ nương tất cả phước Ví như địa-cầu gìn cung-điện Khéo truyền đạo mầu rất an-vui Phương-tiện như đây Bất-Động thấy.     8.Lửa trí sáng lớn cùng pháp-giới Hiện hình vô số đồng chúng-sanh Mở bày chân-thật vì muôn loài Tinh-Tú-Vương Thiên được tỏ-ngộ.     9. Phật như hư-không không tự-tánh Vì lợi chúng-sanh hiện thế-gian Tướng-hảo trang-nghiêm như bóng hình Tịnh-Giác Nguyệt-Thiên thấy như vậy.   10. Chân lông thân Phật diễn thinh Âm; Mây pháp thế-gian che trùm khắp Người thấy kẻ nghe đều vui mừng Đại-Oai-Đức Thiên được giải thoát.

The Buddha emits light pervading the whole world; Illumining lands of the ten directions; Proclaiming inconceivable, vast, great dharmas; Destroying forever the darkness of sentient beings’ delusion.   2.His states are boundless and without end. Throughout measureless eons, constantly he teaches and guides, Transforming all sentient beings with various modes of self-mastery. Flower Cowl contemplates the Buddha in this way.   3.The ocean of sentient beings’ minds varies in every thought. The Buddha’s extensive, profuse wisdom knows this all. Everywhere, he speaks Dharma, bestowing happiness: This is the liberation of Wonderful Radiance.   4.Sentient beings, lacking the joyful serenity of sages And mired and confused on evil paths, endure all miseries. The Thus Come One shows them the door of the Dharma nature. Peace and Joy beholds and reflects upon this.   5.Rare is the Thus Come One’s great kindness and compassion. To benefit sentient beings, he enters all realms of existence. Speaking Dharma, he exhorts them to goodness, helps them succeed: This is what the god Bright Eyes understands.   6.The World Honored One expounds the Dharma’s brightness, Differentiating the nature of all karma in the world. Good and evil deeds are never destroyed. Upon seeing this, Pure Light rejoices.   7.The Buddha is the mainstay of all blessings, Just like the great earth upholding palaces. Cleverly he reveals a path of security and peace, free from anxiety: The Unmoving One knows this expedient means.   8.The brilliant blaze of the Buddha’s wisdom-fire pervades the Dharma Realm. He manifests countless bodies, equal to all sentient beings. Everywhere, for one and all, he opens up the true and actual. The god Constellation King awakens to this path.   9.The Buddha, like empty space, has no intrinsic nature. Wishing to benefit sentient beings, he appears in the world, Adorned with fine marks and characteristics–a reflection. Celestial King Pure Enlightenment perceives thus.   10.From all the pores on the Buddha’s body issue universal sounds. His Dharma cloud blankets the entire world. Those who hear also delight in it without exception. The god Light has awakened to this liberation.

Avatamsaka (Flower Adornment) Sutra

The Flower Adornment Sutra is the Sutra of the Dharma Realm and the Sutra of Empty Space. To the exhaustion of the Dharma Realm and empty space there is no place where the Flower Adornment Sutra is not present. Wherever the Flower Adornment Sutra is found, the Buddha is to be found, and also the Dharma and the Sangha of Worthy Sages. That is why when the Buddha accomplished Proper Enlightenment, he wished to speak the Great Flower Adornment Sutra to teach and transform the Great Knights of the Dharma Body. Since this Sutra was a Sutra of inconceivable wonder, it was then concealed within the Dragons' Palace for the Dragon King to protect. Afterwards, Nagarjuna-- "Dragon Tree" Bodhisattva went to the Dragons' Palace, memorized it, and brought it back.

 

The Flower Adornment Sutra is like an auspicious cloud in empty space, which extends throughout the Three Thousand Great Thousand World-System, raining down the sweet dew of Dharma rain to moisten all living beings. The Flower Adornment Sutra is also like the sun, which everywhere illumines the Great Thousand World-Realm, bringing warmth to every single living being. The Flower Adornment Sutra is also like the great earth, which can produce and grow the myriad existing things. Therefore, it can be said that any period in which the Flower Adornment Sutra exists is a period in which the Proper Dharma long remains.

 

Consequently, in our daily investigation and lecturing of the Flower Adornment Sutra, it is essential to rely upon the Sutra's principles to cultivate and to use the Sutra as a cure for our own personal faults. Those who are greedy, after hearing the Flower Adornment Sutra, should rid themselves of greed. People who have hatred, upon hearing the Sutra, should give up their hatred; and those who are stupid should stop being stupid. The principles discussed in the Sutra are designed to correct our faults and bad habits. It is absolutely not the case that the Sutra was Dharma spoken for Bodhisattvas with no relation to us, or that it was Dharma spoken for Arhats with no relevance for us. Don't think, "All I as an ordinary person can do is listen to the Sutra. I could never aspire to the states of a Sage." To think that way is to throw yourself away, to separate yourself from the Sages.

 

From the beginning to the end of the Flower Adornment Sutra, every phrase of the Sutra is an unsurpassed Dharma jewel. If we are able actually to apply and cultivate according to the principles in the Sutra, then we are certain to become Buddhas. For that reason the Flower Adornment Sutra can be called the Mother of all Buddhas. The Flower Adornment Sutra is the Dharma Body of all Buddhas. The Buddha praised the Vajra Sutra saying:

 

In any place where the Sutra text is found, there is the Buddha.

Wherever the Flower Adornment Sutra is, there is the Buddha. The Buddha is right there. It is just that your karmic obstacles are too deep and heavy, so although you are face-to-face with him, you do not see the Buddha. As it is said,

 

Face-to-face, not recognizing Guanyin Bodhisattva.

Right now our thousand-handed, thousand-eyed image of Guanyin Bodhisattva constantly emits unobstructed light which reaches all living beings with affinities throughout the entire Three Thousand Great Thousand World Realm; yet we here daily bow to the Buddha, recite the Buddha's name, bow to Guanyin, and recite Guanyin's name, but do not see Guanyin Bodhisattva. We just follow along with the crowd, bowing when people bow, reciting when people recite, which is just to be turned by the states of others and not actually to take it up into our own persons and minds.

 

"How, then, should I be in my daily bowing and recollection of Guanyin Bodhisattva? Should I continue to have a huge temper? Should I still retain my old faults and not change them?" If you are that way, you could bow to the exhaustion of the boundaries of the future, but you would never see Guanyin Bodhisattva. If you can change from evil and go towards the good, and truly rid yourself of your faults and bad habits -- doing your best to reform and become a new person -- Guanyin Bodhisattva is certain to come to your aid. That is why some people cultivate a good many years without opening the least bit of wisdom, while others cultivate and, without being aware of it, open their wisdom and acquire unobstructed eloquence. We Shramanas should diligently cultivate precepts, samadhi, and wisdom, and put to rest greed, hatred, and stupidity. In every move we make we should return the light and look within. If you cultivate that way, you will make progress. If we listen to the Flower Adornment Sutra, lecture the Flower Adornment Sutra, and recite the Flower Adornment Sutra, but fail to practice according to the principles of the Flower Adornment Sutra, the Sutra remains the Sutra, you remain you, I remain myself and others remain themselves, and we cannot unite as one. If we ourselves can become one with the Sutra by acting according to its principles, that is actual union with the Sutra. If you are unable truly to practice in accord with the Sutra, but instead are deficient in kindness and compassion with a dearth of joy and giving, having ignorance and afflictions as your only companions, then you have failed to understand the Sutra and lack the ability to listen to the Sutra. Upon hearing one phrase of the Sutra we should ask ourselves, "How should I act? Should I run after my faults and bad habits, or should I rely upon the principles of the Sutra and cultivate?" If you can constantly ask yourself that question, you will certainly obtain great benefit. The reason you have not obtained great benefit is simply that you look upon the Sutra as the Sutra, having no connection with yourself. Actually, when the Buddha spoke the Flower Adornment Sutra, it was spoken for all living beings including you, me, and everyone else of the present. The Buddha is face-to-face with us, speaking it for us from his golden mouth. When we listen to the Sutra, it is the same as having the Buddha take us by the ear and speak the principles right to our face, telling us to use the Sutra's Dharma doors to cultivate.

 

None of the Dharma doors goes beyond the self-nature of each one of us. Our self-nature, too, exhausts empty space and the Dharma Realm. Therefore, if you can expand and enlarge the measure of your mind, you will unite with the Flower Adornment Sutra, being two and yet not two. If all people can make the states of the Flower Adornment Sutra their own states and receive the Flower Adornment Sutra's limitless principles and infinite wisdom as their own, how vast and great that will be. As it is said,

 

It is vast and subtle.

Let it go, it fills the whole universe.

Roll it up, it secretly hides away.

That is ineffably wonderful!

1.Tỳ-Lô-Giá-Na Phật

 Hay chuyển chánh pháp-luân

 Pháp-giới các cõi nước

 Như mây đều cùng khắp.

 

 2. Trong mười phương chỗ có

 Những thế-giới rộng lớn

 Phật nguyện lực thần-thông

 Chuyển pháp-luân khắp chỗ.

 

3 Tất cả những cõi nước

 Trong chúng-hội rộng lớn

 Danh-hiệu đều chẳng đồng

 Tùy ưng diễn diệu-pháp.

 

 4 Như-Lai oai-lực lớn

 Phổ-Hiền nguyện tạo thành

 Trong tất cả cõi nước

 Diệu-âm đều khắp đến.

 

 5.Phật thân khắp pháp-giới

 Khắp rưới những mưa pháp

 Vô-sanh vô-sai-biệt

 Thế-gian hiện tất cả.

 

 6 Muôn ức vô-số kiếp

 Trong tất cả quốc-độ

 Việc làm từ thuở xưa

 Diệu-âm đều nói đủ.

 

 7.Mười phương vi-trần cõi

 Lưới sáng trùm khắp nơi

 Ánh sáng đều có Phật

 Khắp hóa độ quần-sanh.

 

8.Phật thân vô sai biệt

 Đầy khắp trên pháp-giới

 Đều khiến thấy sắc thân

 Tùy cơ khéo điều phục.

 

 9.Tam thế tất cả cõi

 Tất cả đấng Đạo-Sư

 Danh-hiệu sai khác nhau

 Tuyên thuyết đều khiến thấy.

 

 10.Quá hiện và vị-lai

 Tất cả chư Như-Lai

 Chuyển vi-diệu pháp-luân

 Chúng-hội đều nghe được.

Can turn the wheel of Proper Dharma.

Cloud-like, his presence pervades

All lands of the Dharma Realm.

2.In the great seas of worlds

Throughout the ten directions,

By the Buddha’s spiritual powers and vows

The Dharma wheel everywhere turns.

3.In each and every land,

Amidst vast assemblies,

Buddhas, their names each different,

Proclaim the wondrous Dharma as appropriate.

4.The Thus Come One achieved his awesome power

Through Universal Worthy’s vows.

In every land and country,

His wondrous voice is heard.

5.The Buddha’s bodies, numerous as dustmotes in lands,

Everywhere send down the rain of Dharma.

Beyond birth and discrimination,

He appears in all worlds.

6.Through countless billions of eons,

In lands as numerous as dustmotes,

All the past deeds of the Buddha

Are told in full with wondrous sound.

7.Lands many as dustmotes in the ten directions

Are completely suffused with radiant nets.

Every luminous ray reveals a Buddha

Teaching all sentient beings.

 

8.The Buddha’s body, undifferentiated,

Fills the entire Dharma Realm,

Beings who see his physical form

Are skillfully subdued according to their capacities.

9.In all lands throughout the three periods of time,

The guiding teachers of beings,

Their names various and unique,

Speak for them and enable them to see.

10.The wondrous Dharma wheel

Turned by all Thus Come Ones

Of the past, present, and future

Can be heard in this assembly.

Heavenly music sounds,  The world delights.     2.Buddha comes into the world! Buddha comes into the world! The Earth quakes. The glorious, ultimate Truth  guides us. Buddha comes into the world! I am peaceful and joyful. Countless species of sentient beings are enlightened, All living beings everywhere are rejoiced to see Buddha.     3.Tathagata appears in the world. He manifests to be born in the world. His body is in golden color. Oh, his appearance is so adorned, wondrous.       4. The Savior comes into the world ! The dry tree has sprouted green branches. If Buddhas did not appear within the world, No one would gain peace and joy.     5. Shakyamuni, Unsurpassed Honored One, He is the Lamp of world; He rescues and protects all living beings He brings peace and joy everywhere.     6. All joy and peace in the world. Bestowed  on by the Buddha. The Teacher brings joy and peace; He universally rescues all beings from suffering.     7. To save  all living beings who are sinking and drowning; Therefore Buddhas appear in the world. Let’s quickly generate Bodhicitta. To sever  the samsara of birth and death.     8. Oh, Shakyamuni Buddha! I recite  respectfully  Your  Name. All sentient beings are sorrowed Buddha extends His hands to save them  all.     *Buddha comes into the world! Buddha comes into the world! The wonderful heavenly flowers rained down, The fragrant Udumbara flowers  bloom. Buddha comes into the world! Buddha comes into the world! Heavenly music sounds, the world delights.     * Buddha comes into the world! Buddha comes into the world! The Earth quakes. The glorious, ultimate Truth  guides us. Buddha comes into the world! His supernatural power pervaded  the myriad directions. He preached the Dharma to rescue many realms. I delightfully make offerings to Him.     11. Buddhas turn peerless Dharma Wheel. They rain down the sweet dew and Dharma rain. They sever our  illusion and  pollution. They  help us return to the Original pure mind.     12. The Buddha is my Teacher. He teaches me the Unsurpassed Dharma We go through measureless  eons Can repay the debts of gratitude  to Buddhas.       13. Replete with the Buddha's sea of merit and virtue, We cannot praise it enough. I respectfully bow gassho to Buddha  I vow to cultivate Samantabhadra's Conduct.     14. Let’s sing aloud together To celebrate Shakyamuni Buddha's Birthday Oh, what a wonderful day ! Our reverence for the Buddha is overflowing.     *Buddha comes into the world! The morning when Buddha was born, The world is joyful, delightful; For all sentient beings, the Buddha manifests throughout  all worlds.   Under the sacred  bodhi tree, He accomplishes the Proper Enlightenment.   Buddha’s  wisdom is perfect; He knows all Dharmas. His radiance lights up everywhere. He universally teaches and protects  all sentient  beings. 4.  Bậc cứu thế xuất hiện !

Cây khô đã đâm chồi.

Nếu Phật không ra đời,

Không ai được an lạc.

 

 

5. Thích Ca, đấng Vô Thượng!

Ngọn đèn soi thế gian

Cứu độ muôn chúng sanh.

Mang an lành khắp chốn.

 

 

6. Mọi an lạc thế gian,

Đều là do Phật ban.

Vị thầy đem vui, an

Dang rộng tay cứu khổ.

 

 

7. Cứu chúng sanh chìm đắm

Nên chư Phật ra đời.

Mau phát Tâm Bồ Đề.

Không luân hồi sinh, tử.

 

 

8. Ôi, đức Phật Thích Ca!

Con xưng niệm hồng danh.

Tất cả muôn chúng sanh,

Phật dang tay cứu hết.

Hoa trời rưới khắp, Thơm hương Ưu đàm.

Phật ra đời! Phật ra đời!

Nhạc trời trỗi vang, Trần gian hân hoan.

Đại địa chấn động, Chân lý sáng soi.

Phật ra đời ! Con thảnh thơi!

Muôn loài giác ngộ, Muôn nơi vui mừng.

 

9.  Sắc thân Phật oai, đẹp;

Chúng con kính khen hoài!

Trí Phật đầy viên mãn,

Cứu khổ khắp muôn loài.

 

 

10. Phật ngồi gốc bồ đề.

Thần thông rải muôn phương;

Thuyết pháp độ muôn cõi.    

Con hoan hỷ cúng dường.

 

11.  Chư Phật chuyển Pháp Luân

Rưới mưa pháp cam lồ,

Trừ vô minh, nhiễm ô.

Trở về tâm thanh tịnh.

 

 

12. Đức Phật là thầy con,

Dạy con pháp Vô Thượng,

Biết bao kiếp vô lượng

Mới đền hết ơn Ngài.

 

 

 

13. Ân đức Phật bao đời

Tán dương chẳng thể hết

Con chắp tay kính lễ;

Nguyện học hạnh Phổ Hiền.

 

 

14.  Nào cùng hát vang lời!

Mừng Thích Ca ra đời,

Ôi, một ngày tuyệt vời!

Lòng kính Phật không vơi.

16.Chấn động địa cầu;

Ôi Phật đản sinh

Thế giới thêm bình an

Nguyện cứu muôn sinh linh.

 

 

17.Buổi sáng Phật ra đời!

Trần gian hân hoan;

Vì chúng sanh, Ngài hiện thân!

 

Dưới cây thiêng, thành Chánh Giác.

Trí Phật sâu!

Biết mọi Pháp!

Quang minh vô biên

Khắp hóa độ quần sanh;

Muôn loài  nghe ra,

mà giải thoát.
